Minnetonka's Jacquelyn Everson did not need much to work with to give her team a sweep of Wayzata on Saturday.

Evenson struck out seven and pitched a shutout to give the Skippers a 1-0 win against the Lake Conference rival Trojans in the second game of a doubleheader at Minnetonka High School.

Evenson went through three innings perfectly, but things got a little dicey after.

The Trojans almost broke through in the fourth, but Evenson mixed up her arsenal with a few changeups and sinkers that resulted in ground ball outs.

"That was the key," Skippers coach Mary Wiig said. "There were situations when they had a runner at third with no outs, but she threw some great pitches to get us out."

"I learned that we had to mix it up a little and keep them off balance," Evenson said. "Especially in those innings where they had runners on second and third. Just needed to make a good pitch, and I know that our defense is great."

Wayzata nearly tied it in the sixth when Emma Schifferle went deep to center. Anna Gimmestad tried to score all the way from first but was thrown out at home on a perfect relay.

"We work on those things and just hope they work out," Wiig said. "McKenzie Paap is a great center fielder, and we know that she can throw anyone out at home, but it is nice to see a perfect relay work out the way it did."

"I was pretty excited to see that," Evenson said. "It ended up being the difference in the game, and for a play to happen like that right in front of you was amazing."

Minnetonka improves to 9-4 and importantly sits in first place in the Lake Conference with a 7-2 mark.

"That is our goal, just to stay on top there," Evenson said. "We just hope we can keep getting better, and today was a big day because we got two big wins."
