Anoka’s Emilie Brigham signed to play college hockey at Maine but is also handy with a bat.

A second baseman and leadoff hitter, Brigham started off a May 9 game at Osseo with a home run over the center-field fence. She added a second homer later but her Tornadoes lost 5-4.

A day later, she started a game against Minneapolis Southwest with a home run and added a double and single as Anoka won 13-2.

Big bird comes on strong

Coon Rapids senior lacrosse player Max Polson scored a combined 16 goals in three games last week.

An offensive lineman for the Cardinals football team, Polson stands 6-1 and weighs 280 pounds. As Coon Rapids coach Dale Comer wrote in an e-mail, “He is not your typical lacrosse player.”

Polson, in only his second year playing lacrosse, scored one goal last year. He has 31 in eight games this spring.

Mustangs win true team

The Mounds View boys’ and girls’ track and field teams won their respective Class 3A, Section 6 meets and qualified for the True Team state meet Friday at Stillwater High School.

The Mustangs boys’ team embodied the meet’s philosophy, not winning an event or relay but taking the title by more than 150 points.

On the girls’ side, four individuals grabbed first place: Olivia Fixsen (100-meter hurdles), Kristine Dahl (pole vault), Elizabeth Menne (long jump) and Veronica Rasmussen (shot put and discus). Mounds View’s 4x200 and 4x400 relays also topped the field.

Duo sparks Crimson

Maple Grove’s softball team went 8-1 last week, thanks to the efforts of Sydney Smith and Sarah Southorn.

Smith pitched her team to six victories and posted a 0.60 ERA. She batted 24-for-34 with six doubles, one home run and 17 RBI. Southorn was 18-for-30, including three home runs against Andover.

Hentges shines on diamond

Mounds View’s Sam Hentges batted 13-for-29 with three home runs and eight RBI in eight games last week. He also had 10 strikeouts in six innings.
