- Blooming Prairie pitcher Shelbi Swenson was tired of having nightmares.

Throughout the past year she dreamt of losing last year’s Class 1A state championship game and longed to rid herself of the painful memory. But instead of dwelling on the past as motivation for Friday’s 1A title game as Caswell Park, she thought positively to help her team claim the program’s first championship with a 3-1 victory over New Life Academy of Woodbury.

Swenson gave up just one run on four hits, one walk and struck out eight to finish an impressive run through the two-day tournament. She also provided the RBI that put the Awesome Blossom in front for good as part of a three-run fifth inning.

“I thought about it last night, but today I tried to think positive and visualize coming out on top,” Swenson said.

New Life Academy wasn’t prepared for the crafty pitcher, Valerie Hohol said. The Eagles sophomore pitcher had two of her team’s hits and was responsible for its only run. That run gave New Life Academy the lead for an inning before Blooming Prairie took control.

Tessa Ivers led off the Awesome Blossoms’ big inning by reaching on an error. Then Jenna Krell and Swenson singled, followed by a Sam Ivers double.
