NORTH MANKATO, Minn. – Kasson-Mantorville completed its perfect season Friday.

The Komets improved to 28-0 with a 3-0 victory over Le Sueur-Henderson in the Class 2A state softball championship at Caswell Park in North Mankato.

It’s the program’s first state title and first undefeated season.

“It’s such a great feeling. No team beat you this year,” Kasson-Mantorville pitcher Maddie Damon said. “We wanted 28-0 and we wanted a championship.”

Damon threw a one hitter and struck out 11 in the complete-game shutout. She allowed just one run throughout the tournament.

The impressive effort should attract a new nickname for the junior standout. After the Komets lost last year’s state title game, the Kasson-Mantorville baseball team began to call her “second-place Maddie.” The friendly fire was motivation for Damon and her teammates.

Second baseman Dana Rasmussen said the Komets spoke of last year’s letdown every day, and the leadership of eight seniors helped keep the team focused on finishing the job.

“It really didn’t hit me until [Friday]” that an undefeated season was possible, Rasmussen said after contributing a pair of hits and run in the title game. “Winning every game is special. We just had great chemistry.”

Damon and Cori Kennedy each drove in a run for the Komets. Le Sueur-Henderson’s Carlie Brandt gave up seven hits and struck out nine.
