Shakopee one step away from state tournament berth

CLASS 3A

• SECTION 2:
Shakopee has waited since 1980 to return to the state tournament. It has moved within one victory of ending that drought, beating Prior Lake 6-2 and Mankato West 4-1 in the Final Four on Saturday at Caswell Park in Mankato. The Class 3A, No. 5 Sabres will meet the winner of the two teams they beat for the championship in the double-elimination tournament Thursday. Mollie Annen and Liz Bade hit back-to-back home runs for the Sabres against Prior Lake. In the Mankato West victory, winning pitcher Ashley Walker threw a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts, and also hit a two-run home run. Walker was also the winning pitcher in the Prior Lake game.

• SECTION 3: Kelsey Anderson scattered six hits while striking out eight as Class 3A, No. 1 Burnsville beat Park of Cottage Grove 2-1 in the winners’ bracket. The senior pitcher gave up two two-out hits in the top of the seventh inning, but struck out the final batter with runners on second and third. Megan Lehnen went 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI.  Her walk in the bottom of the sixth resulted in a pinch runner eventually coming around to score the game-winning run.
