Senior has hopes for Sabres' first state tournament berth since 1980

Mollie Annen

Senior third baseman Mollie Annen has experienced plenty of memorable moments as a member of the Shakopee softball team throughout her career.

She still has one elusive goal to accomplish.

"We really want to make it to the state tournament," Annen said. The Sabres last appeared in the state tournament field in 1980.

Here is a closer look at Annen:

Best movie I've seen in the past year: "The Town."

Three songs I never skip on my iPod are ... "Georgia Clay" by Josh Kelley; "What the Hell" by Avril Lavigne; "Love You Long Time" by Black Eyed Peas.

Three words or phrases my friends or teammates might use to describe me? Focused; honest; motivated.

How do you balance school and sports during the year? I get as much homework done in my study halls as I can, and then try and finish the rest after games. I try not to procrastinate on larger projects, so I don't fall behind.

How did you get started playing softball? My parents just signed me up for T-ball and then I moved up to in-house softball. I actually had no intention of playing traveling softball, but my parents signed me up for that, too, even though I really didn't want to.

At my first varsity practice, I felt ... very intimidated and felt out of place because I was an eighth-grader playing with all the older girls.

What is your favorite pregame meal? Spaghetti and cheesy bread, especially when it's a team dinner.

What is your most memorable moment as a high school athlete? Beating Prior Lake in a 1-0 game at home to clinch the (Missota) conference championship title for the second year in a row.

What did you work on in the offseason? I worked on strength training and improving the consistency of my batting.

I know I have an edge on an opponent when ... their team starts being quiet and not cheering on their own teammates.

If you could change one thing about high school sports, what would it be? I would give softball more recognition as a sport. We have had a winning team for the last three years and we still don't get nearly as many fans as baseball or hockey games, which is really frustrating because it's fun when fans are there to cheer you on.

In 10 years, I hope I have ... a successful career and have enough time to keep playing softball, even if it's just an adult slow-pitch league or even coaching a softball team.

Who is your favorite college or pro sports team and why? The Wild because I really love to watch hockey. It's an intense game with lots of action and fights.

Do you have a secret talent - and if so, what is it? I was actually in Concert Choir, so I'm a pretty decent singer even though I don't like to sing in front of other people by myself.

What is the best sports advice you ever received? "Sometimes your attitude is more important than how good you are."
