Carlton vs. Mayer Lutheran

3 p.m., Saturday, April 7

While this game does not feature a defending state champion, it features teams that played in the Class 1A tournament a season ago. And both appear ready to get back to Mankato this year.

Carlton broke through to the state tournament last season by knocking off six-time defending Section 7 champion Cherry, and the Bulldogs will rely on their core of sophomores to repeat as section champions.

The group had 90 RBI last season behind four standouts — catcher Alaina Bennett, outfielder Taylor Nelson, shortstop Abby Mickle and third baseman Brynne Mickle.

Mayer Lutheran counters with an experienced squad led by Mya Chmielewski, who helped lead the Crusaders to the Class 1A volleyball state championship in October.

The senior catcher also has some strong skills on the softball diamond, finishing last season with 26 RBI and three home runs. Chmielewski not only anchors the defense from behind the plate but also is one half of the Crusaders' solid battery. The other half is senior pitcher Martina Saulsbury, who posted a 1.85 ERA a season ago.
