New York Mills vs.

Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal

5 p.m., Friday, May 18

This game features the top two teams in the Class 1A rankings and could be a preview of a state tournament matchup.

New York Mills hasn't slowed down after winning its first state championship last season, and the No. 1-1A Eagles (16-1, 8-0) are poised to make a run at a second state title. They have three all-state players returning, including senior pitcher Rhiana Roberts, who posted a 2.19 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched at state last year. She is accustomed to playing in big games and could show no signs of nerves in this massive regular-season tilt.

While New York Mills has made the past four state tournaments, Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal has gone 12 years without a tourney appearance. However, the No. 2-1A Titans looked primed to make some noise this postseason.

NCE-U/H (14-0, 7-0) is off to perfect start because of strong performances from players such as sophomore second baseman Alivia Mortenson. One of her best outings came in the Titans' 11-1 win over Ada-Borup/Norman County West on April 17, when she went 3-for-4 with five RBI and hit a home run.
