Game 2

A familiar face in Minnesota softball used a familiar path to a second straight berth in the Class 4A state softball tournament.

Defending Class 4A champion Stillwater is Mankato-bound, traveling the same route it did a year ago: the Ponies lost a Section 4 tournament game to league rival Cretin-Derham Hall, then swept through the loser's bracket to win the section title.

On Thursday Stillwater swept two games against Cretin-Derham Hall, winning the first game 8-1 before taking the nightcap 16-7.

First report

Stillwater swept a doubleheader from Cretin-Derham Hall to claim the Class 4A, Section 4 championship at McKnight Field in North St. Paul Thursday.

The Ponies claimed an 8-1 victory over their Suburban East Conference rivals in the first game, then used a nine-run third inning to post a 16-7 victory over the Raiders in the second game.

The second-game star for Stillwater was catcher Torri Chute, who slammed three home runs. Her solo shot got the nine-run third-inning rally started, and she closed that rally with a two-run shot before adding a two-run homer in the fifth.

The Ponies (18-9) appeared poised to close out the second-game win by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth, only to see Cretin-Derham Hall's Allie Reding poke a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to force one more inning.

That allowed Stillwater's Allison Benning hit her second home run of the game, as part of a three-run seventh. Benning's first was a two-run shot in the third, an inning in which the Ponies sent 12 batters to the plate and collected eight hits.

In the first game the Ponies used a six-run sixth-inning to break open a tight contest. Benning, who pitched a complete game, was the standout of that contest, limiting the Raiders to just three hits and one unearned run, striking out four and walking two. At the plate she had a pair of hits, including a two-run single in the six-run sixth-inning rally.

Stillwater also got three hits from freshman Cat Smetana, while four other players — Chute, fellow senior Ani Bell and freshmen Morgan Wohlers and Taylor Gray — had two hits.

Cretin-Derham Hall (8-17) scored its lone run in the fifth when a groundout by Cece Ziegler scored Kenna Lexau, who had singled to lead off the frame.
