Softball state tournament seedings announced

Forest Lake, Mankato West, Norwood Young America and New York Mills earned top seeds.

Forest Lake, Mankato West, Norwood Young America and New York Mills earned the No. 1 seeds in their respective classes for the softball state tournament starting Thursday.

Teams were seeded Saturday morning through a series of conference calls between coaches state tournament teams. The tournament is set for Thursday and Friday at Caswell Park in North Mankato.

Forest Lake (22-2) earned the No. 1 seed in Class 4A. The Rangers have won 13 consecutive games and have lost to just one team this season, Park of Cottage Grove, which defeated them twice. Maple Grove (22-2) was seeded No. 2 and East Ridge (22-2) picked up the No. 3 seed. Defending state champion Stillwater (18-8), the third team from the Suburban East Conference, was seeded No. 4 and Farmington (15-9) No. 5. Those two teams will face each other in the quarterfinals.

Eden Prairie, Edina and St. Michael-Albertville were unseeded. Eden Prairie will play East Ridge, Edina will play Maple Grove and St. Michael-Albertville will play Forest Lake in the other quarterfinals.

Mankato West (23-1) was seeded No. 1 in Class 3A while fellow Big Nine Conference member Northfield (18-3) was seeded No. 2. The No. 3 seed went to Becker (19-5), No. 4 went to Cloquet (19-4) and No. 5 to Benilde-St. Margaret’s (16-8). Mahtomedi (13-8-1), Detroit Lakes (17-6)  and Visitation (11-14) were unseeded.

In the Class 3A quarterfinals, Mankato West will play Visitation and Benilde-St. Margaret’s will meet Cloquet in the upper bracket while Detroit Lakes will play Northfield and Mahtomedi plays Becker in the lower bracket.

Making its first state tournament appearance, Norwood Young America (23-2) picked up the No. 1 seed in Class 2A, followed by No. 2 Rochester Lourdes (21-3) and No. 3 Pipestone (22-2). In the 2A quarterfinals, No. 4-seeded Thief River Falls (23-3) will play No. 5-seeded Le Sueur-Henderson (18-7) while unseeded Esko(18-6) will meet Norwood Young America in the upper bracket while unseeded Annandale (17-8) will play Rochester Lourdes and Concordia Academy (21-4) will play Pipestone in the lower half of the bracket.

In Class 1A, two-time defending state champion New York Mills (23-2) was seeded No. 1 and will play unseeded South Ridge (18-5), a school on Minnesota’s Iron Range, in the quarterfinals. The other side of the bracket features No. 5-seeded Badger/Greenbush-Middle River (21-4) against No. 4-seeded Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (22-0). The Buccaneers are the only undefeated team in the tournament.

The other half of the Class 1A quarterfinal bracket will pit No. 2-seeded Randolph (22-2) against unseeded Isle (18-3) and No. 3-seeded Edgerton/Southwest MN Christian (17-5) against New Ulm Cathedral (22-2).

Quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Thursday and all four championship on Friday.
