CLASS 3A

• SECTION 4: Stillwater will get a chance to defend its Class 3A title. The Ponies finished their perfect run through Section 4 with a 6-2 victory over East Ridge in the finals on Thursday at McKnight Field in North St. Paul.

Senior pitcher Hannah Heacox (15-2) struck out nine and allowed only three hits in a complete-game victory.

Sidnee Ronsberg put Stillwater in front early with a two-run home run in the second inning. Ronsberg went 2-for-3 with three RBI. The Ponies would add two more runs in the fifth inning, and Rachel Hartwig added a two-run homer in the sixth.

Anna Roth hit a home run for East Ridge. Alison Tarara scored the Raptors’ first run of the game.

JASON GONZALEZ

• SECTION 5: Maple Grove sophomore Sydney Smith beat Coon Rapids with her arm as well as her bat. Smith hurled a three-hitter and went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI as the Crimson topped the Cardinals 5-1 in the championship game. Maple Grove will be making its third state tournament appearance in the past four years. It was the state runner-up a year ago.

• SECTION 6: Orono is headed back to the state tournament, too. The Spartans scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, breaking a two-all tie en route to a 7-2 victory over Edina in the final. Orono scored two runs the previous inning, evening the score at two. Junior Erin Garry had two hits and scored two runs for the Spartans while junior Madison Arends drove in two runs. The Spartans finished third in the state tournament a year ago.
