Spring is ready to really get rolling any day now, and conference championships are heating up, too.
Case in point is this battle in the Hiawatha Valley Conference, where Cannon Falls travels on Wednesday to play Kasson-Mantorville, the top-ranked team in Class 2A.
The KoMets, runner-up to New Ulm at last year's state Class 2A tournament, are a perfect 13-0, including a 7-0 mark in conference play.
Maddison Damon has been stellar on the mound with 12 wins, tied for second most in the state. She has also has 140 strikeouts, second to only Carlie Brandt of Le Sueur-Henderson, who has 187.
In 13 games this season, Kasson-Mantorville has only allowed four runs and has 10 shutouts. Its closest content was to Mankato East, a 2-1 victory on April 25.
Cannon Falls, 8-1 overall and 7-1 in the conference, has been keeping pace with Kasson-Mantorville all season. A loss to Rochester Lourdes is its only blemish on what has otherwise been a stellar year.
The Bombers have won their last five games by a combined score of 39-8. Lydia Franken has a .500 batting average and is second on the team with seven RBI.
