The Trojans won the Mankato East tournament with a 10-2 victory over the host school

New Prague softball coach Anna Borwege was eager to get the season started. She has a group that wants to return to the Class 4A state tournament.

The Trojans won the Mankato East tournament with a 10-2 victory over the host school in the championship last weekend. It was the third time they scored 10 runs in their first four games.

The Trojans shut out Edina 3-0 in the quarterfinals and Burnsville 10-5 in the semifinals. They opened the season with a 10-6 victory over East Ridge in nonconference play.

“We had a great first weekend of competition,” Borwege said. “I’m proud of the way this team competed defensively, but especially proud of our performance at the plate. Putting up 33 runs in four games to start the season is something we are very proud of, and hope to build on as the season continues.”

Senior first baseman Nichole Reed got off to a phenomenal start. She had 12 hits in her first 13 at-bats (a .923 batting average) and had five RBI.

“Nichole has provided a consistent and confident bat in our lineup,” Borwege said.

Senior catcher Taylor Koehnen scored seven runs, drove in another seven and stole six bases.

“Taylor is a smart and patient player offensively and defensively,” Borwege said.

The Trojans’ primary pitcher, Mia Kraimer, helped her own cause at the plate. The sophomore had nine hits (an .818 batting average) during the strong start.

“Mia provides an aggressive, strong bat in our lineup,” Borwege said. “We are excited for what is to come for her this season.”

Not to mention the rest of the Trojans’ lineup. They lost both of their games in the state tournament a year ago.

“I have high expectations for this team,” Borwege said.

Change on the fly

Farmington boys’ hockey coach Lee Goren is stepping down after just one season at the helm.

The Tigers, who were coming off a Class 2A state tournament appearance in 2016, finished 9-17-1 last season. They won only one of their final seven games, a 3-1 victory over Rochester John Marshall, which it defeated twice during the season.

Goren played 67 games in the NHL with the Boston Bruins, Florida Panthers and Vancouver Canucks. He played collegiately at the University of North Dakota.

Top performances

• Sophomore Jillian Noel got her softball season off to a superb start. Noel went 3-for-5 with a home run, five RBI and two runs scored as Northfield defeated Austin 13-1 in a Big 9 Conference matchup. She led the Raiders last season in home runs and RBI.

• Shakopee senior shortstop Zack Henderson was ready for his final prep season opener. Henderson went 3-for-4, including a home run and two doubles, with five RBI and two runs scored in the Sabers’ 17-4 nonconference victory at New Prague.
