Hopkins' all-star shows off her vocals, slugging ability

Hayley Nybo

Is there anything she can’t do?

HopkinsHayley Nybo, a 2010 All-Metro softball first-team catcher, sang the national anthem before the Royals’ home opener against Wayzata last Wednesday.

“I’ve always told her she has a beautiful voice and should sing the anthem,” Hopkins coach Anne Campbell said. “We raise the flag on the hill behind our school before the first game. With Hayley singing, it was a very moving experience.”

Nybo then got the Royals off to a fast start on the field. She led off the bottom of the first inning by knocking a home run over the left field fence on the first pitch she saw.

“She hasn’t been getting a lot to hit,” Campbell said. “She had been swinging at pitches that were outside and popping them up. So I moved her to leadoff. She crushed that one.”

Nybo finished the game 2-for-4. She has helped the Royals start the season 3-0 heading into this week. Hopkins is scheduled to play Edina and Prior Lake this week.
