Senior hoping for back-to-back trips to state

Taylor Workman

Prior Lake’s softball team returned to the state tournament last season for the first time in five years.

Senior catcher/first baseman Taylor Workman would like to make it back-to-back trips for the first time in school history.

The Lakers were shut out 5-0 by Hastings in the Class 3A quarterfinals in 2010. Prior Lake split its next two games in the consolation bracket, finishing sixth.

Workman is one of the leading hitters for the 10th-ranked Lakers. She went 3-for-4 with one RBI in a 5-2 victory over Lakeville North in a South Suburban Conference matchup.

Here is a closer look at Workman:

Best movies I’ve seen in the past year: “Despicable Me” and “Tangled.”

Three songs I never skip on my iPod are … “Never Say Never” by Justin Bieber;  “The Show Goes On” by Lupe Fiasco; “Can I Fly” by B.O.B.

Three words my friends or teammates might use to describe me? Friendly; kind; compassionate.

How do you balance school and sports during the year? School always comes first but teachers are pretty understanding when you are in sports, which is nice to have.

How did you get started playing sports? I started playing in kindergarten and loved it ever since. I have made a lot of friends and gone a lot of places while in it.

Who is your school’s biggest rival, and why? Burnsville, because they are good competition for us.

At my first varsity practice, I felt … nervous but anxious.

What is your most memorable moment as a high school athlete? My favorite memory would be when we made it to the [Class 3A] state tournament last year, my first year on varsity.

What did you work on in the offseason? Catching and batting, also doing clinics and dome ball.

What are your goals for the softball season? My goals would be to be successful as a team and to make it to the state tournament again this year.

To get focused for a game, I … like to be loose and think we’re unstoppable.

What is your favorite pregame meal? Pasta dinners with the team.

If you could change one thing about high school sports, what would it be? For softball, I think it would be cool to play under the lights every game.

When you have time off during vacation, what do you like to do? Relax and hang out with friends.

Who is your favorite college or pro sports team and why? My favorite pro sports team would be the Twins!

In 10 years, I hope I’m … teaching in an elementary school in Minnesota.

What is the best sports advice you ever received? “Players win games, teams win championships.”
