Schmidt leads New Life closer to another state tourney berth

CLASS 1A, SECTION 4 • SEMIFINALS

NEW LIFE ACADEMY 11, MINNEAPOLIS WASHBURN 1: The Eagles moved one step closer to their fourth straight Class 1A state championship behind a commanding performance from pitcher Rebekah Schmit. She threw a complete-game one-hitter, striking out 15 and went 2-for-2 with a home run.

MARANATHA 1, ST. PAUL HUMBOLDT 0: Pitcher Maddi Lee carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with a thirteen-strikeout one-hitter. She also scored the game’s lone run, leading off the seventh inning with a single and scoring on Madolyn Picknell’s single.

CLASS 3A, SECTION 5 • SECOND ROUND

TOTINO-GRACE 10, SPRING LAKE PARK 0 (6 INN.): Erika Meyer continued her dominant ways, pitching her seventh consecutive shutout, giving up two hits and striking out seven. The Eagles offense played long ball in support, getting a pair of home runs from Nicole Rogers and a grand slam from Caroline Ponessa.

CLASS 2A, SECTION 5 • EAST SUBSECTION

PARK CENTER 10, WATERTOWN-MAYER 0 (5 INN.): The 2010 Class 2A defending state champion Pirates ran their winning streak to 13 games, using a one-hitter from junior ace Nicola Tade to ease past the Royals. Tade struck out 10 batters to move to 15-3 this season. Senior McKenzie Lindberg hit a two-run home run to pace the offense.

DELANO 1, MOUND-WESTONKA 0: Tigers pitcher Rhea Ylitalo pitched a five-hit shutout, striking out seven and outdueling Mound senior Kim Hutchins (4 hits, 8 K) to set up a showdown on Thursday with Park Center for the section championship.
