Governors advance to state in wild, walk-off fashion

CLASS 2A, SECTION 4 CHAMPIONSHIP

St. Paul Johnson 4, Visitation 3, 8 inn.: When Blazers catcher Anne Debertin ripped a two-run double in the top of the eighth inning, things were looking bleak for the Governors. But Johnson drew three walks in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with two outs for senior Kirsten Gorman, one of the squad’s hottest hitters. With a 3-2 count, Gorman delivered, as she had throughout section play, nailing a bases-clearing triple to send the Governors to the state tournament for the first time since 2005.

“The kids didn’t know we won, they were so shocked,” Johnson coach Ron Snaza said of the moments following Gorman’s game-winning hit. “And then it dawned on them all, and they started celebrating.”

Junior Katie Donohue pitched all eight innings for Johnson, allowing five hits while striking out 11. Seventh-grader Sarah Otto went the distance for Visitation.

CLASS 1A, SECTION 4 CHAMPIONSHIP

New Life Academy 1, Maranatha Christian 0, 8 inn.: The Mustangs gave everything they had but it wasn’t enough to topple the Eagles, who will return to the state tournament in search of their fourth consecutive state title.

It was a scoreless pitcher’s duel through seven-and-a-half innings before senior Natalie Schad tripled to lead off the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore Nicole Johnson followed with a single to drive home Schad with the winning run.

Eagles senior Rebekah Schmidt threw a five-hit shutout while striking out 18 for the victory. Freshman Maddi Lee went the distance for the Mustangs and allowed just three hits, but took the loss.

CLASS 3A, SECTION 5 PLAYOFFS

Totino-Grace 3, Centennial 1: Totino senior Erica Meyer helped the Eagles stay perfect, striking out seven in the circle and going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Totino-Grace (23-0) will face Centennial (18-4) again on June 2 for the section championship.

CLASS 3A, SECTION 6 PLAYOFFS

Wayzata 10, Hopkins 1: Senior Meg DuPuis hit a grand slam, and sophomore Steph Kirk hit a three-run homerun as the Trojans beat the top-seeded Royals. Junior Jessica Williams scattered four hits and three walks while striking out seven as Wayzata moved into Thursday’s section championship unbeaten. The loss sent Hopkins into the losers’ bracket, where they beat Orono 12-2 in six innings to earn a rematch with the Trojans at noon on Thursday. The Royals would need to win twice in order to capture the section title.
