Magic of regular season falls short at state tournament

Shakopee's softball team had a memorable season this spring, finishing the regular season 16-1 then surviving in the Class 3A, Section 2 tournament. The Sabers defeated Mankato West 9-8 in eight innings in the winner-take-all championship game at Caswell Park in North Mankato. But that magic, which lifted Shakopee to its first state tournament since 1980, couldn't be replicated last week at the same spot.

The Sabers lost both of their state tournament games, falling 13-3 to Hopkins in the quarterfinals then 3-1 to Bloomington Jefferson in the consolation bracket.

Against the Royals, Shakopee took to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Mollie Annen led off the game with a double to center, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a two-out RBI single to left by Lindsey Sheehan. Shakopee made it 2-0 in the third when Ashley Walker drove home pinch-runner Allison Christ, but then Hopkins took over.

The Royals plated seven runs in the bottom of the third, sparked by Genevieve Grahek's three-run double off Walker, who struck out 10 in a losing effort.

In the loss to the Jaguars, Shakopee again gave up the lead. Jefferson scored runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings after falling behind 1-0 on Walker's RBI double.
